We are constantly out in the world. But from 1982-2002, we raised our four kids abroad as we lived and worked under Communism, seeing the fall of the Soviet Union, which took place in our office building, and then working in the Middle East during 9/11.
We sought to make sense of the events around us and realized that only by returning to our childhood experiences could this be done. Being the Grims, it was natural that we should record our recollections as did another set of Grimms long ago – as Fairy Tales. Like the original Grimm’s tales, ours are for the young and the young at heart. As C.S. Lewis said, “Some day you will be old enough to start reading fairy tales again.”
And as J.R.R. Tolkien did in Lord of the Rings, we intersperse the prose with lyrical pieces that beg to be read, chanted or sung aloud — even to yourself, just for the fun of it!
For nearly two decades, JB (Julia Beth) coordinated study abroad at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, sending midshipmen across the seven seas to the four corners of the globe.
